A YEAR IN SOCIAL MEDIA

This page, cross-posted from The Friar’s Lantern, showcases some of the ways that the student staff I advised from 2012-2018 used social media over the course of the 2017-2018 year. I trained student editors and contributors to use these social platforms for journalistic purposes.

Below the content, you can find a sample of our Social Media Contract and a presentation that our editors shared at a national convention in 2015 about what they learned through managing social media.

I believe that it’s sometimes harder to teach things than to do them. It’s also incredibly worthwhile to see people grow, learn, and take pride in their work—which is exactly what happens when students take ownership of publication tools. Journalism is 21st century English, and the skills to produce and evaluate social media are vital.
